Solar panels are sold as a fit and forget job. Get them on the roof, keep an eye on the app and enjoy lower energy bills. Mostly that’s true, but low maintenance isn’t no maintenance, and plenty of homes across Northwich and mid Cheshire are missing out because nobody’s thought about solar panel cleaning since the day the installer left. We clean solar panels every month from our base in Cuddington, mostly on homes, with a commercial job every quarter or so. Here’s our honest take on when cleaning makes a real difference and when it doesn’t.
Do Solar Panels Really Need Cleaning?
It depends where they are. On a steep pitched roof in an open spot, regular Cheshire rain rinses off a fair bit of loose dust and pollen, and panels like that only need a clean every so often. Rain won’t shift everything though. Bird droppings, greasy film from passing traffic and moss creeping in from the frame edges all stick fast, and rainwater can leave its own light residue as it dries. The panels’ pitch matters too. Flatter panels, panels under trees, near main roads or anywhere birds like to perch get dirty much faster, and that’s where a proper clean pays for itself.
What Builds Up on Solar Panels in Cheshire?
Bird Droppings
In the towns we work in, bird droppings are the big one, especially around Northwich, Winsford and homes near the River Weaver where gulls and pigeons gather. They land, bake on in the sun and block the light from the solar cells underneath completely. Because panels are wired together, one badly covered panel can pull down the output of the others connected to it. The worst we’ve seen was in Northwich. One panel was about 95% covered in bird droppings, practically white. Once it was cleaned, the customer told us their generation jumped straight away. If birds keep coming back, it’s worth asking your solar installer about bird proofing, usually a mesh barrier fitted around the edge of the panels.
Traffic Dust and General Grime
This is the one we see most. It’s not dramatic, just a dull film of traffic dust, pollen and bits of leaf that builds up slowly until the glass looks grey. Live near the A556 or the M6 round Knutsford? Yours will get it faster. Same goes for rural areas next to farmland, where dust from fields and tractors drifts onto the roof, and it gets worse again when pollen counts are high in late spring.
Moss, Mould and Leaves
Panels sit in the sun most of the day, so they stay drier than the roof around them and moss struggles to get going. It still finds a way into the bottom corners and along the frame on shady roofs, and mould growth tends to show up in the same spots. If you’re surrounded by big trees, say near Delamere Forest, Hartford or Sandiway, expect leaves piling up along the bottom edge every autumn.
How Much Does Dirt Affect Solar Panel Efficiency?
Less than some cleaning companies will tell you, if we’re being straight. Ordinary dirt on a sloped roof usually costs a few percent of output over a year. Small, but over the lifetime of a solar PV system it’s money off your electricity bills and less to sell back at your export rate. If you’ve got battery storage, it’s less saved up for the evening too. Heavy soiling is another matter. Panels caked in bird droppings or with moss spreading across the glass lose far more, because whole sections stop producing.
How to Tell If Your Panels Need Cleaning
Open your monitoring app or check the inverter and compare this month with the same month last year. A noticeable drop with similar weather usually means dirt. Have a look from the garden too. White spots, green edges or a dull film you can see from the ground will be worse up close. If the numbers look odd but the glass looks fine, ask your installer about inverter health checks, as the problem may not be dirt at all.
How Often Do Solar Panels Need Cleaning?
For most of our Cheshire customers, every three or six months is plenty. Many add solar panel cleaning to their regular window clean through one of our maintenance packages, so it’s done at the same visit without anyone having to remember. A few have them done monthly because they want them working at full energy efficiency all year round. Homes near trees, farmland or main roads usually need cleaning more often than an exposed pitched roof. We’ll tell you what makes sense for yours when we quote.
Can You Clean Solar Panels Yourself?
Safety First
You can, but be careful. Most domestic panels are on a roof, and we’ve heard of people, older homeowners especially, coming off ladders trying to reach them. Professionals work under the Work at Height Regulations 2005 for good reason, and the HSE’s guidance on working at height is worth a read before anyone goes up a ladder.
What Not to Put on the Glass
Skip the household sprays and washing-up liquid. They leave a film that dust sticks to, and anything harsh can damage the anti-reflective (AR) coating that helps the panel absorb light. Mild soapy water won’t do harm in a pinch, but it needs rinsing off properly. Keep the high-pressure washer away, as it can damage the seals and the glass. A hose with tap water is better than nothing, though it’ll leave mineral spots once it dries. Doing it yourself? Stay on the ground, use a soft brush and plenty of clean water, and leave the roof alone.
Our Professional Solar Panel Cleaning Service
Everything is done from the ground with a telescopic water-fed pole and a soft brush, so nobody’s climbing about on your roof. The water runs through a filter that strips out the minerals, leaving deionised water. With nothing left in it, it dries without spots and doesn’t leave a layer for the sunlight to fight through. No soap, no chemicals. Pure water lifts the dirt on its own, so there’s no sticky residue, nothing running into your garden and nothing to harm the AR coating. Most manufacturers recommend a gentle, chemical-free clean like this, so it’s the safe option for your warranty too. It’s the same pure water system we use for our window cleaning across Cheshire. The only panels we won’t clean are damaged ones. If we spot cracked or broken glass, we’ll let you know so your installer can take a look.
How Much Does Solar Panel Cleaning Cost?
Every job is priced individually, as the number of panels, roof height and access all make a difference. If your panels are easy to reach, it’s usually not much more than a window clean, and better value again as part of a maintenance package. We also clean commercial flat-roof arrays and panels on business premises through our commercial cleaning service.
