Exterior Cleaning in February: Why It’s a Smart Time to Get Ahead

You are here:

February often feels like a quiet in-between sort of month. Winter is still very much here and making us think when will the sun come back!!! Spring, however, isn’t that far off, so it makes an ideal time to have a look around your homes exterior and think what needs doing. Yes, when it comes to exterior cleaning, February is a great time to get ahead rather than catch up, especially when it comes to window cleaning in Cheshire. In our blog this month we will take a quick look at why late winter is a sensible time to deal with windows, gutters and other exterior areas, what winter weather tends to leave behind, and how a bit of forward planning now can make the rest of the year easier to manage. Let’s dive in…

What winter leaves behind on your home’s exterior

By this time of year when February arrives our homes have already taken the full impact of winter. Weeks and weeks of wind, rain and damp don’t just disappear on their own, and they often leave subtle signs behind on your home’s exterior. Windows become dirty, gutters fill up on with old leaves and debris, and other exterior areas such as your patio, decking or driveway can start to look tired.

Because winter light is duller and we spend more time indoors, these changes can easily be missed. Dirt builds up gradually on glass and frames, while gutters can fill slowly without causing problems straight away. Everything can appear fine at a glance but it’s likely small issues are starting to develop. So February is often when these signs begin to show more clearly. That makes it a sensible time to have a good look over your home’s exterior and deal with minor dirt build up before spring growth and starting to use the outside of our houses more puts extra pressure on windows, gutters and other areas.

We’ve also written in more detail about why cleaning windows in winter still makes a difference if you’re curious.

Why February is ideal for planning, not rushing

February sits in a useful gap between winter and spring. It’s a time when most people are not yet thinking about outdoor jobs in any serious way, but it’s often the point where small issues are visually noticeable and get you thinking. This makes it a great month for planning ahead for your upcoming exterior cleaning, rather than waiting until everything suddenly feels urgent and it’s hard to get the professional help you may need. That’s because when spring (finally) arrives, demand for exterior cleaning tends to increase quickly, each year at Pristine Clean we get a huge increase in calls from March onwards, so we often tell our customers it’s good to book in professional external cleaning early! Your windows, gutters, roofs along with outdoor areas like patios, decking and driveways all come back into extra use at the same time. So it’s a good time now to make sure that jobs that can be dealt with calmly earlier on don’t end up being pushed back. Having a walk around your house (wrapped in all your winter clothes and a hat holding a cup of tea… and a biscuit) to take stock in February gives you breathing space and more flexibility to book or plan any exterior cleaning you want to do.

It can also be overwhelming when you see all that needs to be done, remember though, not everything needs to be done at once. So knowing what’s starting to build up or where attention might be needed means you can spread work out over the coming months. A bit of forward planning now often makes exterior cleaning easier, more manageable, and less disruptive once the weather improves. Some homeowners find that spreading jobs out as part of ongoing exterior maintenance makes things far easier to manage.

Windows, gutters and exterior surfaces: what to check now

Now you are all wrapped up and ready to brace the cold what do you need to check? Firstly, you don’t need ladders or tools, just a slow walk around to see how things are looking after the winter months. Look out for the following:

Windows – Dirt and grime can build up on the glass and frames over winter, making rooms feel duller inside. You may also notice marks around seals or sills that weren’t there earlier in the year. Little pockets of green moss are now making home in the corner of the frames too. These aren’t always serious problems, but they’re worth noting before they worsen.

Gutters . Leaves, moss and debris tend to collect gradually, and by late winter the gutters can be holding far more debris than you realise, which is why professional gutter cleaning is often needed before problems start. Overflowing gutters aren’t always obvious in dry weather, so February is a sensible time to check for any signs of blockages, staining, new trees growing out of gutters, we joke but we have found all sorts of things growing in gutters, fully rooted trees, ivy creeping in and once we even found a blocked drain that was due to a raw chicken thigh that the owner had NO IDEA how it got there. Bet you want to go and check your gutters now right?

Patios and Driveways – Patios, decking and driveways often show signs of algae or built up dirt after months of damp conditions. While these areas might not be in regular use yet, spotting early build-up now makes it easier to plan cleaning before spring and summer arrive. Keep an eye out too for slabs cracked during the cold months or any other damage, this will need to be noted before you start attacking with a pressure washer to prevent permanent damage. If you’re planning to tackle these areas, it’s worth understanding when pressure washing is suitable and when a gentler approach is better.

How regular exterior cleaning makes spring easier

Keeping on top of exterior cleaning through the late winter months can make a noticeable difference once spring arrives. Rather than facing a long list of jobs all at once, regular cleaning helps spread the work out and prevents dirt and debris from becoming more stubborn over time.

Windows, for example, are much easier to maintain when they’re cleaned consistently. Built-up grime doesn’t get the chance to harden, frames stay in better condition, and indoor spaces feel brighter as the days start to lengthen. The same applies to gutters, where routine checks and clearing reduce the risk of blockages just as heavier spring rainfall and new growth begin.

Regular attention to patios, decking and other exterior surfaces also means they’re ready to use sooner when the weather improves. Instead of having to deal with months of built-up dirt or slippery patches, light maintenance now helps everything feel more manageable later on.

Overall, regular exterior cleaning allows spring to arrive without the pressure of catching up, making it easier to enjoy outdoor spaces as the season changes.

A calm start to the year for your home

None of this is about turning February into a big project month. It’s more about a few gentle reminders while most of us are still very happy staying indoors where it’s warm. A quick look outside now can save a lot of hassle later, without everything needing to be done all at once. If nothing else, we hope these little reminders help you spot things early and plan ahead at your own pace. Winter has a habit of leaving things behind quietly, and it’s often easier to deal with them bit by bit rather than all in one go when spring finally arrives.

And while you’re sensibly retreating back inside with a cup of tea, we’ll happily be heading back out into the cold to keep windows, gutters and exteriors ticking along. That way, when the weather does start to improve, your home is already one step ahead.
